Straus, Oscar Solomon

Straus, Oscar Solomon
(1850-1926)
   American diplomat and jurist, brother of Nathan Straus. He served as American minister in Turkey, and later was apointed to the International Court of Arbitration at The Hague. He was secretary of commerce and labour in the US (1906-9) and then ambassador to Turkey. He helped to found the American Jewish Committee, served as an officer of the Baron de Hirsch Fund, and was president of the American Jewish Historical society. In his writings he illustrated the impact of Hebrew concepts on American culture.
